BAMBOO AS BUILDING MATERIAL

The Auroville Bamboo Centre, ‘Bamboo and Lime’ workshop aims at teaching the participants the basics of working with bamboo, a plant with amazing characteristics, and Lime. First, the students will learn how to harvest, treat, and work with bamboo using both traditional and modern techniques. After the brief theory, they will split into groups to get more hands-on practice. Over the years, in Bamboo Centre, students have built bridges, storerooms, showrooms, workshops, houses, toilets, domes and many eco-friendly cost affordable structures using a variety of techniques, which integrate bamboo, steel, jute, lime, and earth as their primary component.

OBJECTIVES

  • Learning how to use bamboo as a building material along with lime which has been used in building construction for thousands of years to create durable mortar and plaster.
  • Applying the proper construction methodologies for the task at hand
