DESCRIPTION:Overview:\n\nThe Bamboo Hyperbolic Paraboloid Dome workshop is a 3 days learning experience that offers the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of bamboo construction and Hyperbolic Paraboloid technique, while engaging in a unique self-inquiry in the company of an international team of mentors. The workshop takes place in Auroville, a dynamic international community committed to sustainable living, radical experimentation and personal development. \nBENEFITS & WHO IS THIS FOR?\nThe Bamboo Hyperbolic Paraboloid Dome workshop is perfect for, Architect, Architect Students, Engineers, Environmentalist, Green Practitioners   and anyone who wants to gain skills on sustainable lifestyle and hands-on experience working with bamboo, one of the most eco-friendly building materials, while also exploring various aspects of sustainable living. It is for anyone who is concerned about building a more environmentally sustainable world. (e.g. engineers, architects, technicians, supervisors, masons, students and laymen).\nAn essential aspect of building a more sustainable world is the quality of the consciousness we bring to it.  Our outer environment – whether built or natural – reflects the state of our inner awareness.  \nPROGRAMME OUTLINE\nThe Hyperbolic Paraboloid Dome workshop will take place over 3 days, covering full day intensive sessions offered daily from 9 AM to 5 PM.  The sessions are offered according to two areas of focus, as follows:\n1. NATURAL BUILDING WITH BAMBOO\nBamboo is an eco-friendly natural resource known for its rapid growth. As a core component of the workshop, participants will gain the basic knowledge, skills and practice needed for bamboo construction, as well as technologies that use bamboo in combination with other materials.  Sessions include:\n\nTheory and practice of working with bamboo\nTreating bamboo against insects\nBamboo carpentry: bending, cutting, joineries, split and weave bamboo\nBamboo construction\n\nAfter learning basic skills in bamboo technology, participants will help in making a bamboo structure and learn the know-how of building construction. \n2. HYPERBOLIC PARABOLOID DOME\nA hyperbolic paraboloid (sometimes referred to as ‘h/p’) is a doubly-curved surface that resembles the shape of a saddle, that is, it has a convex form along one axis, and a concave form on along the other. It is also a doubly-ruled surface, that is, every point on its surface lies on two straight lines across the surface. Horizontal sections taken through the surface are hyperbolic in format and vertical sections are parabolic.\nThe fact that hyperbolic paraboloids are doubly-ruled means that they are easy to construct using a series of straight structural members. As a consequence they are commonly used to construct thin ‘shell’ roofs. These can either be formed using timber, bamboo or steel sections.\nThe use of hyperbolic paraboloids as a form of thin shell construction was pioneered in the post-war era, as a hybrid of modern architecture and structural engineering. Being both lightweight and efficient, the form was used as a means of minimising materials and increasing structural performance while also creating impressive and seemingly complex designs.\nRather than deriving their strength from mass, like many conventional roofs, thin shell roofs gain strength through their shape. The curvature of the shape reduces its tendency to buckle in compression (as a flat plane would) and means that they can achieve exceptional stiffness. Being braced in two directions they experience no bending and are able to withstand unequal loading, whether from dead loads (such as equipment hung from the ceiling), or live loads (such as wind).\nThings to bring for the workshop, (Optional)\n\nLoose and comfortable clothes for Site Work;\nAir Mask;\nEar plugs;\nA Cap;\nEye Protective Goggles;\nA Book and a Pen\nTarch light \nGENERAL INFORMATION\n\n Programme Rate: Rs. 7000 * Includes:\n\nLunch for 3 days ( vegetarian meals) \nRaw materials\nRefreshments twice a day\nStationaries \nCertificate of attendance\n\n\nTerms: 50% deposit of workshop fee required on booking with balance payable prior to commencement of workshop.\nCancellation: Up to 2 weeks before workshop commencement we retain 25% of total fee due.\nFrom 2 days to workshop commencement we retain the 50% total fee.\nNotes: All booking communication is completed in writing by email.\nAuroville has a strict no alcohol or drugs policy. Anyone disregarding these rules will be requested to leave the community immediately and no refunds will apply.\n\n
